Here are some examples of digital stories that present interviews with musicians. It can be interesting to use on and off-camera interviews to let the artists tell their own stories in their own words, about the music they create.

These first two clips were a part of an online promotion for Berlin’s public, internet radio station multicult.fm

The first is a short-story from Berlin jazz pioneer “Detroit” Gary Wiggins. I interviewed Gary using Skype. He recorded his audio portion at home using a small digital audio recorder. After the interview, Gary was kind enough to e-mail me the .wav audio file he recorded, along with some of his original .mp3 music files, photos and videos from his personal collection. In this instance, I used a short segment of our interview as a narrative and choose which visuals I needed to reveal his story in a rhythmic, up-beat, swinging tempo. Its a solid example of using an element of pleasant surprise at the very end of a deeply personal story.

This next story comes from jazz music legend Joe Sample. My friend, radio producer Wolfgang König, called me one day (on very short notice) to ask if I wanted to meet Mr. Sample during an interview he was conducting. I took my IPhone along and, during Wolfgang’s interview, snapped some photos and short video clips. When Wolfgang sent me the audio file of the interview, I selected an interesting moment of his 20 minute recording and some particularly expressive photos of Mr. Sample at different moments during their conversation. The resulting edit captures an intimate personal story from a world-renowned composer sharing valuable insights into his creative process.

The next four video clips are a part of an ongoing series of interviews from a multicultural, Berlin-based, music collective called “The Family.” These stories have been used as part of a social media promotional campaign to introduce a brand new music project to Berlin’s music community. Music collective members have embedded their short stories on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and shared them with their own social networks. One of the goals of this project was to highlight the strength of diverse teams, in this case language difference, as an outreach to minority communities within homogenous cultures. Also, these short interviews are useful for advanced language learners to view without subtitles, as language learning tools.

The first short features many of the members describing their impressions of their new project after their very first rehearsal. Since I was aiming for spontaneity, I deliberately did not discuss in detail with the musicians what they should say. Rather, I took a couple of hours to talk to each musician before shooting (pre-interviewing) to build trust and make sure that each person was comfortable with me as a photographer / filmmaker. The result is a digital version of a meet-and-greet: each musician was able to speak candidly on camera in a nonjudgmental, relaxed atmosphere, revealing something of themselves and their different personalities to their potential fan base.

After I finished this short film, I re-mixed the individual interviews to create short, first-person stories. As I edited, I used different music tracks and graphics to individualize and personalize each interview. It was important for me that each of these young musicians be able to share their own reflections in their mother-toungues and when possible, expose the music listening public to some of their original music. In sum, each digital story functions as a multi-media resume for each artist.

Between October 2010 and January 2012, I created four image films for the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research. Each short clip told a different story related to past or future SIETAR events. The purpose of this effort was to 1) address the paucity of promotional visual media available in the public domain about SIETAR in Europe and 2) encourage higher production quality image film for the NGO, using low-cost resources.

Much of the film was produced using open source software which I have listed on the http://www.livestream.com/sietarfilmfest channel, an online initiative that I started to encourage intercultural trainers to create their own films for intercultural training.

The first film was in German and explained in simple language what SIETAR Germany is all about.

The second film was a promotional trailer for the SIETAR Europa Congress Film Festival in September 2011.

The third film was a collage highlighting the events of the SIETAR Europa Congress in Krakow, Poland. It is in Polish and English.

The fourth film was a promotional image film for the upcoming SIETAR Forum 2012+38 convention. The convention will take place in Berlin from the 27-29 September 2012.

I have learned that these specific films have greatly encouraged SIETAR Europa members to become more interested in using film for intercultural training. Moreover, along with the digital storytelling workshops that I have continued to develop and present, they have encouraged a more credible discourse on the necessity for interculturalists to become more literate, and competent, in the use of visual language as an educational resource.

This is the English language version of Rita’s Q & A with the brilliant Annemarie Kruse. In this interview, Rita eloquently describes the rationale behind the Booker International Global Cultural Detective® Coaching Program, its significance for the intercultural coaching industry and her vision for the program’s future.

On Monday morning, we filmed an English language and German language version of the same interview. I’m currently editing the German version; it should be posted by the beginning of next week. We are currently planning to film and post French and Romanian language interviews in the coming weeks.

I think this subject matter should be of interest to anyone who is committed to life-long learning, thought leadership, non-violent conflict resolution and intercultural communication education. In wake of the many macro- and micro-sociopolitical and economic global conflicts we witness and experience daily, this kind of intercultural communication coursework should be absolutely mandatory for managers, negotiators and administrators who are in the position of making decisions that impact the lives of thousands, or even millions of people around the world, every single day.
